INCUBUS & SUCCUBUS

There are a many explanations that have been offered for the origin of the Incubus and Succubus legends.

The Incubus is a demon figure closely related to the Vampire in Medieval legends that preys on sleeping women and forcing her to have intercourse with them. The Succubus is the female counterpart of the Incubus and attached men in the same way. However there are some that argue the Incubus and Succubus are not different genders. Some believe they are demons able to change their sex. A succubus would be able to sleep with a man and collect his semen and then transform into an Incubus to be able to spread the seed on women. These offspring were thought to be supernatural and in some cases genetic material from people.

The experiences from these demon figures vary from extreme pleasure to pure terror. The Incubus and Succubus, like the Vampire, often attack their victims at night leaving them exhausted however differed from the Vampire in that it doesn't suck blood or steal life energy. Research suggests the Incubus/Succubus and Vampires are tied closely has expressions of repressed sexual feelings and the Vampire is the more intense of them. But don't confuse the two! While we can acknowledge they share the same attack modes the Vampire is centered around "corpse or the undead" and the Incubus/ Succubus is centered on the victim who survived the demon's attack.

The Incubus seems to have originated in the ancient practices of incubation (from the latin term, "to lie upon"), where a person went to the temple of a deity and spent the night there during which time the person would have contact with the deity. Christianity compared the Pagan deities with devilish demons and viewed sexual practices with them as a form of demonic activity. In religious traditions, repeated sexual encounters with these demons could lead to death.

Throughout history opinions differ on the origin of these demons. Some see encounters with these beings as dreams or fantasy others believe they are instruments of the devil. During teh 15th century church leaders believed they were pawns of the devil and connected them to witchcraft.
